In this Martin Bernheimer article, the claim is made again that fancy directors have been taking over the opera stage. Director’s theater. Eurotrash. Regietheater.

The age old argument here is that opera is all about music. Not about drama.

I’ll accept that. But we always seem to forget that the MUSIC is all about DRAMA. And in the case of great composers, the drama is already apart of the music. But is there anything wrong with taking advantage of everything that is available to work with inside the score?
